Railway track inspection

DESCRIPTION

The mandate consisted of carrying out a complete and detailed inspection of railway infrastructure (tracks, at-grade crossings, supporting structures, signaling systems, etc.) to identify deficiencies and estimate the cost and schedule required to repair each issue. The schedule was very tight, with the contract awarded in October 2023 and the final report due in early 2024. The fieldwork had to be completed before snowfall, which occurred at the end of November 2023.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

The project required adapting to logistical challenges in order to avoid disrupting ongoing railway and port operations. Careful coordination with the port's project manager and security team allowed inspections to be conducted during limited access windows, with no interruption to service. Planning of methods and tools was critical to meet strict deadlines.

To assess hidden rail components at grade crossings, RSRB used specialized non-destructive testing equipement to simulate the effect of train loading. This method provided effective, accurate inspection results without damaging infrastructure.

A full inspection report was prepared, including recommendations, cost estimates, and corrective timelines. RSRB’s inspectors relied on their professional judgment and experience, considering multiple factors such as load effects, defect severity, geometry, and environmental conditions. Where components were not visible, alternative techniques and specialized tools were used, all in compliance with applicable standards.
